Millennial Profile

For this assignment I answered about fourteen questions on the Pew Research website to determine my millennial score.

I scored 70/100 on the Pew Research Center How Millennial Are You? To take the quiz please go to the following website

 http://pewresearch.org/millennials/quiz/

A score of 70 indicates that I am about three points away from the millennial generation whom I will most likely be teaching soon.

By definition, Millennials, an abbreviation for millennial generation, is a term used by demographers to describe a segment of the population born between 1980 and 2000 (approximately). Sometimes referred to in the media as "Generation Y," millennials are the children of the post-WWII baby boomer generation.

I do hope that with a little push in the technological direction i will be able to catch up with my millennial students and help them learn better by incorporating technology in my teaching.

                         Part Two

Where are you in terms of Frand's 10 characteristics of the information age mind set.List the 10 characteristics and report where you are for each one.

1.Computers aren't Technology

I do believe computers are technology

2. Internet better than TV

I think the internet is better than TV because it is more interactive and has much more unlimited information.

3. Reality no longer real.

Sadly this is true, due to advanced data manipulation,we cannot always believe what we see, hear or read.

4.Doing rather than knowing

I am in on this one, knowing about something does not necessarily mean you can perform or do it.

5.Nintendo over logic.

I agree with Frand, whilst the trial and error approach to learning may lead to new discoveries and more understanding, it can also be very frustrating at times in which case the logic approach to learning is better.

6.Multitasking way of life.

I am in on this one, multitasking helps us to get a lot of things done.

7.Typing rather than handwriting.

I am out on this one.Since I am not  fast at typing, I prefer writing out my work before typing for fear that I will loose my thought trend.

8.Staying connected.

I am in,advance in technology today has made staying connected much easier.

9.Zero tolerance for delays.

We live in an impatient world today where people want what they need instantly.

10.Consumer/creator blurring

I strongly believe that creators of any work whether art, science, literature, entertainment etc.,must be given the due recognition and credit for their work.

Word Clouds

I really liked how wordle is described on their website,  "Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends."

I did enjoy using this "toy" a lot as part of the assignment.

                  What I did

I  created a word cloud  from the NETS T Standard for 2000 and for 2008. As a future secondary math teacher I also created  a word cloud using the Virginia Algebra 1 SOL which will be very helpful for my students.

NETS T 2000

NETS T 2008

ALGEBRA 1 SOL

              What I learned

One of the interesting things I found  about Wordle is that, the sizing  of the words is directly proportional to the number of times the word appears in the text (word count).

This leads me to conclude that the NETS T Standard for 2000 was mainly focused on the use of Technology whereas the  NETS T Standard for 2008 emphasized on Learning by both students and teachers.

Carpe Diem versus St Marys

For this class activity, I watched a webinar on the use of technology in Education. This was a very interesting section and I  was surprised at the data on how fast the world is moving from laptops and desk tops to mobile devices for technology.

Don Knezek, the CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education, compares education without technology to the medical profession without technology.

If in 1970 you had knee surgery, you got a huge scar,” he says. “Now, if you have knee surgery you have two little dots.”

Technology is helping teachers to expand beyond linear, text-based learning and to engage students who learn best in other ways. Its role in schools has evolved from a contained “computer class” into a versatile learning tool that could change how we demonstrate concepts, assign projects and assess progress.

From this webinar, I realized that even though both schools were using technology, they each had different approaches towards the incorporation of technology in education.Whilst Carpe Diem students spent about half of the school day siting in front of their computers  learning and being drilled, students of St Marys carried about mobile devices and were actively engaged in hands on learning.

Below are my thoughts on some of the issues raised.

Questions and answers.

1. How prepared for you to engage in each type of learning (Carpe Diem vs St. Marys)?

Answer

I must admit that before this class I was very unprepared for the most part on the use of technology in education. However I have learned a lot from this course and I believe that when I start teaching, I will be able to engage in a balanced approach in using technology in my classroom.

2.Provide specific examples including devices and apps or software, of what you are currently doing in each model if you are teaching.

Answer

N/a

3.If you not in the class now, what would you suggest teachers in your field adopt based on current knowledge of mobile/wireless devices.

Answer

I would suggest a group math  apps called Hands on Maths.

4.What would you recommend in terms of a school wide initiative to improve teaching and learning at this point if you were in a position to do so?

Answer

I would recomend that schools check out success stories of other school districts and see how best they can use the information gained to improve teaching and learning in their own schools.

There is  the story of this North Carolina school district that was looking for an innovative way to help close their math achievement gap in some of their economically challenged schools. They decided to try smartphones. It seems that the mobile devices are working, as the school district has seen an improvement in standardized test scores and students using them outpaced others in the district and across the state.

The schools participating in the program, called Project K-Nect, use the phones in Algebra, Algebra II, and Geometry, allowing students to use them as calculators or to look up information on the web, watch math videos, and play educational games. Students using the phones reported feeling more confident about their math abilities, were more motivated to take other math courses, and over half are now considering a career in a math field.

5.A mixture of the 2 models (Carpe Diem vs St. Marys) is probably in everyone’s future. How do you see executing your version of the blend in your field?

Answer

I see myself moving more towards the St Marys approach to the use of technology in education since it is more hands on and interactive but I will also use the Carpe Diem approach often to assess student learning.

Excel T Test

The t test is a statistics test generally used to test whether means of populations are different. In the t test, a t value is calculated based upon the difference in the means and variances of the two populations. The greater the t value, the more certain it is that the means are different. The t value can be generally described as follows:

t value = (Difference between the group means) / (Variability of the groups)

The t value is a specific point on the x-axis in the t distribution(student’s t distribution). If this t value falls outside the region of required certainty, it can be stated that the two means are probably different. If this t value falls within the region of required certainty, it cannot be stated that the two means are probably different.

The required region of certainty depends upon the degree of certainty required in the test. If 95% certainty is required, then the required region of certainty consists of 95% of the area under the student’s t distribution. The outer 5% is the region of uncertainty. This is also referred to as α (alpha) or the degree of significance. If the t value is large enough to be located all the way out on the x-axis in the 5% region of uncertainty, it can be stated within 95% certainty that the two means are different.
For more information on t test please click here

What I Did

The purpose of  this assignment, was to formulate and test a hypothesis 2 samples using a t test function
Here the categorical independent variable is gender  male/female. The continuous dependent variable is NAEP 2011 4th Grade state reading averages. The hypothesis is stated, then the null hypothesis. Our decision after doing our statistical analysis is to accept or reject the null hypothesis.

Research Question was : Does student’s gender impact 4th grade reading scores performance?

Hypothesis-

H0: (Null Hypothesis)

There is a difference between the male and female scores.
Gender plays a role in the reading scores of 4th graders.
H1: There is no difference.

I went back to the NCES data from the previous assignment and performed a t test to see if there is a difference between the reading scores of 4th grade males and females.

Conclusion

Since the p value is 1.60684E-07 which is greater than 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis and say that “we have a 95% degree of confidence that gender is not a factor in 4th grade reading scores of male and female students.”

To access my T -test data please click here

Future Application

Research topic question for my future class will be: Does student's attendance of summer school during the holidays affect academic grades positively.
Research group : Students in my 9th grade Algebra class
Dependent Variable :Students grades
Independent Variable:Summer School Classes
Null Hypothesis:There is no statistically significant difference in students grades after attending summer school
Hypothesis : Attending summer school during the holidays affects students grades positively.

Excel

Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications.

Excel can be used for storing, organizing and manipulating data.

             What I did
For this assignment,I visited the NCES site to assess and analyze the data on state comparisons to see how my state (Virginia) is faring in the educational landscape.

After looking at the data,I exported it to my computer and then followed the steps provided by my instructor to install the "Data Analysis Tool Pack In Excel".
My Data Analysis included a Descriptive Statistics, this really helped me to get a clear picture or idea of how well my state is doing.

After sorting the data I realized that Virginia is doing quite well in the educational landscape we are well within the first 10 states in most  rankings. In the 2011 reading scores for 4th grades, we were ranked 9th with only 8 states above us and 41 states below us.

Google Sites

Google Sites  is a completely online-based tool that allows you to create a simple or extensive web site. With a few clicks, you can create multiple pages, embed rich content, and even allow others (including students) to add and collaborate on content.

This web site creation tool is one of the simplest available and one of the most flexible. You can create a complex hierarchy of content, include multiple preps on a single site, upload files, and even make blog-like announcements. Additionally it brings together all of the other great Google tools - letting you easily embed Google Docs, Calendar, Picasa albums, and much more.

    What I did
This week I created a Google Site using my SU email account. This is something I will definitely use in future as a classroom teacher to not only communicate with my students but with their parents as well.

I added some information about myself, the best way to contact me, Rubrics for the class to help students stay on task,  as well as my Resume.

This assignment is in line with the ISTE-NETS-T Standards  3-a,b,and c which states : "Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society."

 Teachers:

a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations

b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student successand innovation

c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.

Rubrics-Rubistar

Rubrics are a powerful, authentic tool used to assess students' work. This scoring tool lists specific criteria for a project or piece of work. The criterion helps students to have a concrete understanding and visualization of "what counts". Each standard or criteria also includes a gradation scale of quality. The rating scale could be numerical, qualitative, or a combination of both. Rubrics seek to evaluate assignments based on the sum of a full range of criteria rather than a single numerical score.

For this assignment we were introduced to Rubistar. RubiStar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics but does not have the time to develop them from scratch.

While many teachers want to use rubrics or are experimenting with writing rubrics, they can be quite time-consuming to develop. RubiStar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics but does not have the time to develop them from scratch. RubiStar provides generic rubrics that can simply be printed and used for many typical projects and research assignments. The unique thing about RubiStar, however, is that it provides these generic rubrics in a format that can be customized. The teacher can change almost all suggested text in the rubric to make it fit their own project.
RubiStar also does away with the tedious typing of similar content across all the various quality rating. When you choose a category to evaluate, all the quality ratings are filled in and are ready to customize.

             What I did

I signed up for an account on RubiStar and created a rubric for my future students. For this rubric,I choose assess students work based on Mathematical Concepts, Reasoning,Errors,Terminology ,Notation.as well as Strategies and Procedures.
I then saved my rubric as a permanent file and also shared it on Google documents.

Google Forms - Self Grading Quiz

Google Forms have a lot of uses  one of which is :
Google Forms will allow you to quickly create assessments like class tests and quizzes .  You can set these assessments to be self-grading as well, saving you time in grading assessments and allowing you to spend more time analyzing the data to improve student learning.

What I did

For this assignment, I created a multiple choice quiz in Algebra and emailed the quiz questions to a couple of people to answer.Their answers were automatically updated to my spread sheet.I then created the answer key and entered the formula and Google forms did the rest of the work by grading the responses.I was also able to use Google forms to find the average of each persons work.

How I Will Use Google Forms in my Classroom.

  • Pre-testing students

  • Post-testing students

  • Checking for student understanding and learning in the middle of a unit

Google Forms

Our assignment this week was on the use of Google Forms.

Google forms are a useful tool to help you plan events, send a survey, give students a quiz, or collect other information in an easy, streamlined way. A Google form is automatically connected to a spreadsheet with the same title. You can create and share a form from your Documents List or from any existing spreadsheet. When you send or share a form, recipients’ responses will automatically be collected in that spreadsheet.

I created a Google Form titled "My Relationship with Mathematics".As a future secondary math teacher, this form will help me know how my new Algebra  students view and feel about the subject I teach.Based on this I can modify my teaching styles effectively to help them grow to love and appreciate math better. After creating the forms I was able to embed it in my blog and website.I can also email the link to students and parents as well as share the forms through Google docs.To access my Google Forms please click here

Photostory and YouTube

For this assignment,we were introduced to Photo Story. Microsoft Photo Story is a free application that allows users to create a visual story (show and tell presentation) from their digital photos. The software uses the Ken Burns Effect on digital photos and allows adding narration, effects, transitions and background music to create a Windows Media Video movie file with pan and zoom effects. Once a photo story has been made it can be played on a PC using Windows Media Player.
For this activity I choose to make a PowerPoint presentation on the Kente Cloth which is a traditional cloth which is made by and also mostly worn by my tribe in Ghana which is the Ashanti Tribe. My PowerPoint presentation had 21 slides in all. After this I downloaded a free online version of the  Microsoft Photo Story and made a video of my presentation.I then uploaded this video on YouTube through my gmail account.

Power Point

PowerPoint is one of the greatest computer programs to learn. It is a presentation software program that is part of the Microsoft Office package.PowerPoint uses a graphical approach to presentations in the form of slide shows that accompany the oral delivery of the topic. This program is widely used in business and classrooms and is an effective tool when used for training purposes.

What I did

For this assignment I created a power point on how to find the slope of any given line for my Algebra 1 class. After which I created a dropbox account for the first time. Dropbox is a simple online virtual storage utility that allows you to make your files accessible from almost anywhere. It is designed for those who are tired of e-mailing files to themselves and carrying around flash drives. You can put your documents, photos, and media into your dropbox folder on one computer and they'll automatically appear on any of your other computers that also have dropbox. Dropbox shared folders also allow you to share photos and videos, or work together on projects and reports with your friends online.Anything in your Dropbox will stay up to date across all of your computers and mobile devices and your information is always where you need it.After creating the dropbox account, I placed my powerpoint presentation in the public folder of my dropbox which generated a URL for my work.To access my Powerpoint on slope please click here

Applications

As a future math teacher I will definitely incorporate  powerpoint presentations in my lesson plans to enhance the effectiveness of classroom instruction.This is in line with the first three standards of the ISTE.NETS.T which are;

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

2.Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

3.Model Digital-Age Work and Learning

Some of the benefits of using powerpoint presentations in the classroom include:
  • Main points can be emphasized and the presentation itself can be enhanced by using graphics, animation, or sound.
  • Add flair to presentations with slide and bullet transitions and animated effects.
  • Presentations can be used to make lessons more organized and flexible.
  • Text on a PowerPoint presentation is much easier for students to read than trying to read notes that are written on an overhead projector or chalkboard.
  • Student interest can be stimulated through the use of graphics and cartoons.
  • Variety is the key to keeping the attention of students.
  • Many tools are available for use with PowerPoint, so experiment to see what works best for you and your students.

Google Earth

After using Google Maps for the previous assignment,we were introduced to Google Earth today.

           What I did

I installed Google Earth on my laptop and then played around with this interesting app for a while including viewing my house.I think the resolution was okay.
I then went to Google Maps and selected my planned tour of Math and Science Museums in New York.I selected the KML option,I was then able to open my Google Maps in Google Earth which gave me a more detailed version of the places in my planned tour.
KML is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. KML uses a tag-based structure, to see the KML "code" for a feature in Google Earth, you can simply right-click the feature in the 3D Viewer of Google Earth and select Copy. Then Paste the contents of the clipboard into any text editor. The visual feature displayed in Google Earth is converted into its KML text equivalent nested elements and attributes and is based on the XML standard.

Below is a jing image of my planned tour of Math and Science Museums in New York (Google Earth Version)

The  following is a closer look of  the Buffalo Museum of Science which is  one of the planned tour sites.

 Applications

I believe Google Earth will have many applications in the classroom. After a visit to Google Earth for Educators, I found one very interesting and interactive way to use Google Earth to teach a lesson in Polygons in my math class to view this please click here

Google Maps - A Field Trip to Math and Science Musems in New York

For this assignment,we were asked to use Google Maps to create a fieldtrip for our students. I decided to take my Algebra 1 students on a field trip to visit some of the well equiped and educative Math and Science Museums in New York.

                  What I did

For this partcular trip I chose sixteen museums whose focus are on math and science namely,

Brookhaven National Lab Science Museum
Buffalo Museum of Science
Center for Science Teaching & Learning
Dolan DNA Learning Center
Goudreau Museum of Mathematics in Art and Science
Long Island Museum of Science and Technology
Long Island Science Center
Museum of the Earth
Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences
New York Botanical Garden
New York Hall of Science
Roberson Museum and Science Center
Rochester Museum & Science Center
Schenectady Museum
Sciencenter
The Discovery Center

I then used Google Maps to create a layout of these museums. One of the benefits of using Google Maps is that it provides driving directions, distance and time estimation (duration) for the trip. After creating my Google Map,I used the snip tool to get a picture of my map.

What I learned and how I will use it

Field trips offer the sort of enriching experience that is considered central to successful education.
In their book "Field Trips : A guide for planning and conducting educational experience", Krepel and Duvall (1981) defined field trips as  "a trip arranged and undertaken for educational purposes, in which the students go to places where the materials of instruction may be observed and studied directly in their functional setting...".
Traditional field trips usually involve a teacher directing or constructing an event to produce similar student observations and experiences. Field trips engage and even entertain students, helping to make educational experience more relevant, memorable and meaningful.
I believe this assignment addresses the second standard of the ISTE-NETS,since this field trip will provide me the opportunity to design and develop authentic learning expriences for my students to incorporate the content knowledge gained in class with visual and practical real life experiences.
The following is a picture of my Google Map.

Batchgeo - Location! Location! Location!

The purpose of this weeks assignment was for us to be able to

1. Edit a shared document in rea time and
2. Create, store and share a web based map through a variety of ways including embedding in a blogpost and hyperlinks.

For the first part, all the students in my Educational Technology  Class worked together to compile  a list of their email and resdential addresses onto a google document labelled excel_example.xls.
For the second part, I copied and pasted the edited and shared document into this website called Batchgeo.
Then Batchgeo worked its magic using the information we provided and created a map of the location of all the students in my class which I named "Fall 2012 Online Class".
After which I received an email with the URL address and code for future reference and editing.

 Applications

I beileve this asignment can be related to the second standard of the ISTE-NETS which encourages teachers to design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S.
I can design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity by asking my Algebra students to work together to create a batchgeo map of the locations of all the students in the class.

They can then use this map to calculate the distance of each student from the school, the speed at which they will have to walk to arrive in school on time everyday and the accelaration required.

To access my batchgeo map please click here

One of the cool things for me was that I could view the location (addresses) of my classmates from a Map,Terrain or Satellite point .

The following is a Satellite View of the locations of "Fall 2012 Online Class".

My Jing Screencast

One of the great things about the jing software is that it can be used to make a video from the user's computer screen which can be saved or uploaded  to the web, the program automatically creates a URL to the image that can be shared with others online.
For this assignment,we were asked to create a short video (maximum of five minutes) using jing. For my work I used a powerpoint on how to find the Mean,Median,Mode and Range in any given data.

                     What I did

I first clicked on the yellow jing sun in the middle of my desktop and selected the capture option and the perimeter of my video.I then clicked on the capture video option which gave me a few seconds prompt and then started recording.
One helpful feature about jing video recording is that you have the option to pause, cancel or restart your recording. After recording I clicked on the finish button which gave me  options to save my screencast on my computer. My screencast can also be assessed in my jing history and jing also automatically generated a  URL to enable me share my work with others online.
The jing sun has three prongs namely
  •  capture - this is used to take a picture or record a video
  • history  - this is used to access your previously taken pictures and videos which jing saves
  • more - this gives you the option to contact the jing help center for assisstance or feedback and you can also set up your preferences.

I believe this assignment addresses the second standard of the ISTE-NETS for teachers to design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments by  incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
Using jing to create this video will help me;
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies and abilities using digital tools.
I saved my work as an SWF File on my desktop with the following address

How_to_find_the_Mean,Median,Mode_and_Range.swf

Jing Graphic

For this assignment we were introduced to Jing. This is a program that allows you to instantly capture images and record video on your computer—then share them with other people. It is a great tool for adding basic visual elements to your work.

                               What I did

I downloaded the Jing software on my computer and set it up so that the jing sun sits nicely in the middle of my desktop, ready to capture my screen at a moment’s notice .I can use it to capture a window, pane, or region with just one click. With Jing, I can add an image to my blog, or instantly share my captures through IM, email, facebook and more.
As a teacher , the cool thing about Jing is that I can use it to emphasize a point or explain a tricky concept by marking up my screenshot with a text box, arrow, highlight, or picture caption.
  For this assignment :
I used Jing to help illustrate/explain how to solve systems of eqautions to my students. After creating my images, I captured and saved them on my desktop. This made the images  very easy to access by just clicking on the sun in the middle corner of my desktop.I also used the Screencast option to enable me share my work with others on the internet.
An example of how I will use Jing to  explain how to solve systems of equations to my Algebra 1 class is as follows

Diigo - Social Bookmarking

For this assignment we were introduced to Diigo."Diigo" is an abbreviation for "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff."
I created a diigo account online, to access my account please click here
The first website i bookmarked was the ISTE NETS T website which I know is very important for this course and will also play a vital role in my future career as a teacher.
The following is a snip of first work using Diigo.

For this assignment ,I highlighted the third and fifth standards because I believe they are the ones that are most closely related to this activity.

Diigo is a social bookmarking website which allows signed-up users to bookmark and tag web-pages. Additionally, it allows users to highlight any part of a webpage and attach sticky notes to specific highlights or to a whole page. These annotations can be kept private, shared with a group within Diigo or a special link forwarded to someone else.

Questions and Answers
1.Describe the 3 steps recomended in the film to get started with social bookmarking
Answer
a)You can highlight, add a comment, and bookmark a webpage or a website to revisit and for future reference
b)You can connect and engage with other people based on your bookmarks, tags annotations which will show your interests and preferences
c)Groups can be formed/created and you can also use this to check whether your friends are online and what they have been up to.

2.Describe what is Web 2.0 and how it differs from previous stages of the web
Answer
Web 2.0 is a concept that takes the network as a platform for information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the Internet or World Wide Web. The difference between Web 2.0 and other stages of the web is that it allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them.

3.What is social bookmarking and  what advantages does social bookmarking offer that traditional storage and retrieval websites do not.
Answer
Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online.

Answer
Web browser add-ons add features (for example, extra toolbars, animated mouse pointers, stock tickers, and pop-up ad blockers) to your web browser.
I currently use Internet explorer and some of the add-ons are data toolbar and advanced search bar. These add ons help you to access your most visited sites quicker and easier.I use the google toolbar to access my face book page most of the time. This is really helpful since it helps me access my facebook account quicker without having to type the word and search for it everytime.
